316L stainless steel pipe is lpopular in consumers for its long service life, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. However, lots of people do not know why 316L stainless steel pipe has such good corrosion resistance. Today, HCADTO Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. will simply introduce it to you: the reason for the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel pipe.

The surface of all metals changes with the oxygen in the air, forming an oxide film on the metal surface. The difference is that the iron oxide formed on the surface of ordinary carbon steel will continue to oxidize, leading to continuous expansion of corrosion, and eventually formation of holes.

The surface layer of 316L stainless steel pipe will react with oxygen, but because of its high chromium content, the key to the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel pipe is the chromium content. When the chromium content of 316L stainless steel exceeds 10.5%, the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel will be greatly improved. When the chromium content of 316L stainless steel exceeds 17%, the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel will become very strong.

When stainless steel is alloyed with chromium, the type of oxide film on the surface of stainless steel is transformed into an oxide film similar to that of pure chromium metal. This oxide film can better protect the surface of stainless steel and prevent further oxidation. This oxide film is very thin, through which we can see the original natural luster of the stainless steel surface, so that the stainless steel has the surface luster.

In addition, if the surface layer is damaged, the stainless steel surface will be exposed to the atmosphere and changes in the stainless steel surface. Chromium will automatically help the stainless steel surface to repair itself, forming a passive film on the stainless steel surface and continuing to protect the stainless steel.

The above is the reason why 316L stainless steel pipe has excellent corrosion resistance.
