The early application of stainless steel in the field of construction engineering began in the 1930s. For example, the Savoy Hotel in London, built in 1929, used stainless steel for ceiling and wall decoration. It has maintained a beautiful appearance for 70 years under the sea and environmental pollution. With the economic growth and the improvement of people's living standards, the good comprehensive performance of stainless steel, as well as the advantages of durability, beautiful appearance, long service life, and high cost efficiency, have been know by people. Municipal and bridges, tunnels and other public facilities to residential houses; from decoration, roofs, reinforced concrete, urban water supply projects to residential sinks, baths, stainless steel applications are becoming more and more widely.
(1)Application in decoration engineering. In addition to walls, columns, automatic retractable doors, roller shutter doors, ladder fence handrails, balcony handrails, rain downspouts, flagpoles, lampposts, arcade frames, kitchen and bathroom countertops, sinks, brackets, etc. The application is increasing day by day. Most of the steel grades used in decoration engineering are 304, and 316 is also used.
(2) Application in roof. Early buildings using stainless steel as roofs include the Savoy Hotel in London, the Eurostar Train Station, the Chrysler Building in New York, the Empire State Building, etc. Hong Kong's convention and exhibition center, the roof of the dome stadium in Sapporo, Japan, which was newly built for the football game in 2002, has been adopted successively.
(3) Application in reinforced concrete. The use of stainless steel bars in reinforced concrete structures is used to increase strength and resist the harsh marine environment and the corrosion of embedded steel bars by chlorides formed in concrete. It is used on docks, pile foundations, breakwaters, anchoring systems, mooring rigs, gangways, railings, and can also be used in the chemical industry and other basic structures of important process equipment with high corrosion resistance requirements. Stainless steel reinforced concrete structure, compared with ordinary carbon steel reinforced steel, the initial cost of stainless steel reinforcement is higher, but it is cost-effective considering its good comprehensive performance and service life.
(4) Application in water supply engineering. With the rapid economic development and the improvement of people's living standards, a large number of urban houses, public buildings and tourist facilities have been built, and new requirements for domestic water and hot water supply are proposed. And environmentally friendly pipes. Thin-walled stainless steel has high strength, good toughness, low brittleness at low temperature, low thermal expansion coefficient, long life without leakage, leak-proof, hygienic, non-toxic, non-polluting, high cost-effectiveness, and 100% reuse rate. There are more and more applications in engineering. Japan has promoted stainless steel water supply pipes inside and outside buildings for 25 years. Tokyo water supply pipes are fully stainless steel to ensure clean and sanitary water quality, which greatly reduces maintenance rates and leakage, saves water, and remains intact after the Hanshin earthquake. Singapore legislation stipulates that urban water supply must use stainless steel pipelines, and there are stainless steel pipe standards in the United States, Britain and France. The application of stainless steel in water supply and water treatment projects is becoming more and more common.
In addition, stainless steel structures are used more and more in construction projects such as bridges, pontoon bridges, awnings, and corridor signs.
